What Is Perfect Blackjack Strategy?

What Is Perfect Blackjack Strategy?

Among the vast array of casino games, blackjack stands out in popularity. Its simple rules make it approachable, and it boasts one of the lowest house advantages. This means that while the casino does have a statistical edge, it's much slimmer than games like slots or roulette.

What Is The House Edge In Blackjack?

Before diving deeper, let's clarify what the house edge signifies.

The House Edge represents the casino's mathematical benefit over the player in each game, expressed in a percentage.

Imagine a game with a house advantage of 5%. This simply means that for every £100 wagered, the house expects to profit by £5, thus returning £95 as winnings. Of course, this is an average scenario. Some bets might yield more to the player, while others less. However, the house stands to gain £5 for every £100 bet over numerous plays.

In the game of blackjack, the house holds a mere 0.5% edge. However, this can differ based on the blackjack variant in play. Achieving this minimal edge requires the Perfect Blackjack Strategy. Each card combination presents a statistically best move to optimize your win probability. Deviating from the ideal move allows the house edge to increase.

Fortunately, comprehensive blackjack strategies can be found online, and we've compiled it into a convenient downloadable format.

Perfect Blackjack Rules

The above chart is a comprehensive guide, but to help commit it to memory, we've outlined key strategies below.

This advice is tailored for blackjack games where the dealer sticks on a soft 17. However, we've also thrown in some rules for games where the dealer hits on soft 17.

When To Split

  • Split Aces in ALL situations
  • Split 2s & 3s when the dealer shows a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7
  • Split 4s if the dealer shows a 4 or a 5
  • Never Split 5s
  • Split 6s when the dealer shows a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6
  • Split 7s when the dealer shows an Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7
  • Always split 8s regardless of what the dealer has (yes, even against an Ace!).
  • Split 9s when the dealer shows an Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 9
  • Never split 10s

When To Double

  • double down on a Hard 9 if the dealer's card is a 2 through 6.
  • Double on a Hard 10 unless the dealer shows an Ace or 10.
  • Double down on a Hard 11 unless facing a dealer Ace.
  • Double down on a Soft 13 or 14 if the dealer displays a 5, 6, or 7.
  • Double down on a Soft 15 or 16 if the dealer is showing a 4, 5, or 6.
  • Double on a Soft 17 when the dealer shows anything from a 3 to a 6.

When To Hit or Stand

  • Always hit with a Hard 11 or under.
  • Stand firm on a Hard 12 if the dealer's showing a 4, 5, or 6.
  • Stand against a Hard 13, 14, or 16 when the dealer's upcard is between a 2 and a 6.
  • In any situation, stand on a Hard 17 or above.
  • Always hit when having a Soft 17 or less.
  • Stand on a soft 18 unless facing a dealer with a 9, 10, or Ace.
  • Always stand on a Soft 19 or more.

Blackjack Surrender Strategy

The Blackjack Surrender variant lets you recover half your bet by forfeiting your hand. When using this option, there are strategies to keep the house edge at bay.

  • Surrender a Hard 15 against a dealer showing a 10.
  • With a Hard 16, surrender if the dealer has a 9, 10, or Ace (excluding pairs of 8s).

Guidelines for Dealers That Hit on Soft 17

As mentioned, there are specific rules for blackjack sequences where the dealer hits on Soft 17, although less prevalent, they are accessible.

  • If the dealer shows an Ace and you have a 15, 17, or pair of 8s, consider surrendering.
  • Double down on an 11 if the dealer shows an Ace.
  • Double a Soft 18 when the dealer shows a 2
  • Double a Soft 19 when the dealer shows a 6

Considering Blackjack Insurance

The tips and chart illuminate the best plays for any card scenario, factoring in the dealer's card.

But there's a common query: is taking Insurance worth it?

The simple answer is NO.

When the dealer showcases an Ace, insurance might seem tempting, notably if you're holding a near-perfect hand. However, statistical evidence starkly portrays that insurance wagers are disadvantageous.

Using the perfect strategy results in a blackjack edge around 0.5%, whereas opting for Insurance imposes a staggering 2% to 14% house edge!

Example 1:

Consider this: using a single 52-card deck as a reference.

You'll receive any two cards besides 10s, while the dealer has an Ace.

Sixteen cards valued at 10 remain from a pool of 49 face-down cards.

Thus, the dealer carries a 16 out of 49 probability of drawing a 10 for Blackjack. Meanwhile, your insurance stake has 33 chances in 49 to falter.

A £1 insurance stake has these resultant values:

  • Lose 33 times = -£33
  • Win 16 times = +£32

Accordingly, wagering £1 on insurance projects a £1 loss per every 49 bets placed. This seemingly minor margin accumulates to a 2% house advantage.

Example 2:

To further elucidate, possessing one or more 10s amplifies the insurance bet's house edge significantly.

Upon receiving any two cards valued at 10, and the dealer shows an Ace.

Fourteen such cards remain amidst 49 unexposed ones.

Consequently, the dealer exhibits a 14 in 49 chance to achieve Blackjack, with your insurance wager falling short 35 times in 49.

A £1 insurance stake has these resultant values:

  • Lose 35 times = -£35
  • Win 46 times = +£28

Opting for a £1 insurance when owning two cards valued at 10 signifies a £7 deficit every 49 bets, soaring house advantage beyond 14%!

Blackjack Side Bet House Edge

At numerous blackjack tables, both online and in traditional settings, side bets present additional gambles. The most widespread being:

  • Perfect Pairs
  • 21+3

Side bets appeal due to their immense potential returns despite modest risks. However, do they offer value?

No. They’re not.

The 21+3 side wager's house edge spans from 3.18% to 7.76% based on deck count, with fewer decks augmenting the percentage.

Perfect Pairs entail an edge from 5.8% to 6.8%, underscoring another undesirable wager.

Counting Cards In Blackjack

Implementing perfect blackjack technique efficiently diminishes the house advantage. Yet, despite sound strategy, the house consistently maintains an upper hand, suggesting eventual losses over time. However, Card Counting introduces a means to tilt the balance towards the player.

We have written an article on how to count cards in blackjack Click the link for comprehensive details, though we'll delineate how card counting yields a distinct advantage.

The core of card counting lies in assigning values to cards revealed, estimating high versus low cards left in the shoe.

A shoe rich in high cards (Aces & 10s) predicts frequent Blackjacks, rewarding 3:2, and potentially more dealer busts.

Conversely, when low cards predominate, fewer Blackjacks emerge, lowering dealer bust odds.

Strategically increasing your wager amidst a shoe filled with high cards may culminate in profits, swinging the advantage towards the player.

Effective Ways to Minimize Blackjack's House Advantage

Blackjack, with its appealingly minuscule house edge, is a favored game, yet realizing this edge depends on making strategic bets and informed decisions.

Here's a recap of techniques to drive blackjack's house edge down.

  1. Master Blackjack Tactics - Complimentary Guide to Blackjack Mastery
  2. Never take an insurance bet
  3. Never place side bets
