Located a bit more than five miles from the heart of the city, Newcastle Racecourse, where the Northumberland Plate is held, is nestled in Gosforth Park.

This track, serving both flat and jump racing, is among the nation's top-attended venues, boasting a schedule of over 60 race meets annually.

Newcastle All Weather Track

As the only floodlit straight-mile all-weather track in the UK, Newcastle Racecourse transformed from turf back in 2013, debuting the all-weather setup in May 2016.

Made from Tepeta, similar to Chelmsford and Wolverhampton Racecourse tracks, the surface combines fine silica sand, wax, and fibers.

A good amount of endurance is needed here due to a gentle rise over the last 1.5 furlongs.

Newcastle Jumps Course

With a left-handed galloping oval layout, the jumps course spans roughly one and three-quarter miles, featuring seven hurdles or ten challenging fences.

All-Weather Championships Finals Day – With April's event offering a staggering £1 million across six race categories, it stands as Europe's most lucrative all-weather race day, drawing sizeable crowds.

Northumberland Plate Festival – Often dubbed the “Pitmen’s Derby,” this event is the North East’s equivalent of Royal Ascot, held over three days with Plate Day marking the significant conclusion. Northumberland Plate Festival Ladies Day – A highlight moment for both the racecourse and Newcastle, where attendees dress to impress, enjoy racing, live music, bubbly, and fashion.

• Chipchase Stakes – Staged over 6 furlongs, this event happens in late June/early July.
• Fighting Fifth Hurdle - Taking place late November or early December, this grade 1 National Hunt hurdle is part of the Triple Crown of Hurdling, alongside the Christmas Hurdle and The Champion Hurdle.
• Northumberland Plate Handicap – Open to horses 3 years and older, this 'Plate' is contested over 2 miles and 56 yards, typically occurring in late June, renowned for being one of Europe's wealthiest 2-mile handicaps, previously backed by John Smiths from 2003 to 2016.
