Crystal Palace finds themselves in a tough spot historically, having faced the drop from the Premier League four times - ranking just behind only West Brom's five and Norwich City's six relegations. Though they've clung to their top-tier status over the past decade, breaking into the top 10 league spots has remained elusive for them.
In terms of accolades, Crystal Palace doesn't boast a crowded trophy cabinet. Their standout achievement in recent years is a thrilling FA Cup Final showdown against Manchester United in 2016, where they narrowly lost 2-1 in an intense extra time finish.
The ongoing journey to elevate their game has seen Crystal Palace undergo a series of coaching revamps. As their current tactician's contract wraps up at season's end, Selhurst Park might soon be welcoming a fresh strategic brain to boost the team's fortunes.
On February 19, 2024, the plans for Roy Hodgson to exit as Crystal Palace Manager were officially disclosed.
Roy Hodgson, who once graced the field himself, lends his expertise as the present managerial hand at Crystal Palace. Hailing from Croydon, England, he first saw daylight on August 9, 1947.
Homegrown as a defender, Hodgson carved his path in both English and Swedish clubs such as Crystal Palace, Bristol City, and Halmstad. Yet, it was his management stints that truly carved his reputation.
Boasting over 40 years of experience sailing the managerial seas, Hodgson has helmed several major clubs across Europe. His resume reads like a highlight reel: carving a path for the Swiss team in the 1994 World Cup, steering the ships of Inter Milan, Liverpool, and West Bromwich Albion, and taking Fulham to the brink of glory at the UEFA Europa League finals in 2010.
Another feather in his cap includes his tenure over the England national team, leading them to the Euro 2012 quarter-finals and through the 2014 World Cup's last 16. Alongside England, Hodgson has lent his guidance to the national teams of Switzerland, Finland, and the UAE.
With the curtain seemingly drawn on his career in 2021 as he retired at 74 after a Crystal Palace stint in the Premier League, Hodgson surprised many by picking up Watford's managerial reins the following season after Ranieri's departure.
Barely two months sailed by before Hodgson made a dramatic homecoming to Selhurst Park after Vieira vacated his role as the latest Premier League coach to step away. Signed on until the close of the 2022/23 season, Hodgson's tenure might extend if he can assure Crystal Palace's vitality in the league.
With Hodgson stepping away in February 2024, the club's hunt is already active, zeroing in on potential new leaders to steer Crystal Palace forward.
Possible successors for the Crystal Palace mantle include several familiar faces considered before Hodgson's return. These consist of names like ex-captain Paddy McCarthy, erstwhile Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, Swiss tactician Lucien Favre, who took charge at Borussia Dortmund for two years, and Jesse Marsch, previously at Leeds until his departure in February.
