Leeds United found themselves out of the Premier League back in 2004, only making their way back to the top after 16 long years of grinding through both the Championship and League One. Their comeback was impressive as they wrapped up the 2020/21 season on a high note, landing in the top half of the table. But the following season was a nail-biter as they narrowly scraped by the relegation zone, and this season paints a similar story where they’re slogging to keep their spot.
The team has shuffled through quite a few coaches recently, bringing on board a new manager as recently as February 2022.
Javi Gracia is the man at the helm for Leeds United, a Spanish coach, hailing from Pamplona. He made his entrance into this world on May 1, 1970.
Kicking off his career on the field as a defensive midfielder for various lower-tier Spanish clubs, Gracia hung up his boots in 2004 and shifted gears into coaching. His journey started as an assistant at Villarreal, then led him to take charge of clubs like Cadiz, Almeria, Osasuna, Malaga, Rubin Kazan, Watford, and Valencia.
Gracia struck gold during his stint at Watford, not only securing the team an 11th place finish in the Premier League during the 2018-19 season but also leading them to their first FA Cup final appearance in over three decades, where they faced Manchester City. Despite these highs, by September 2019 he was shown the door after a rocky start to the next season.
By July 2021, Gracia was stepping into the head coach role for Valencia CF, tasked with getting the team back on track in Spain’s top league.
Not long after taking the reins at Valencia, he swapped places with Jesse Marsch to become Leeds United's manager, scoring his first win with a tight 1-0 against Southampton.
Gracia's stint at Elland Road has just begun, and his future rides on where Leeds finds itself in the standings come season’s end.
With their position precarious, the pressure is mounting; if Gracia doesn't pull results, a new figure might be ushered in to replace him this season.
The possibility of Gracia stepping down opens the door for several contenders to step into his shoes.
